Daytona 500 Qualifying – Erik Jones

On Thursday night, February 14, 2019, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series returned on-track at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway to complete qualifying races to set the 61st running of the Daytona 500 field. In the second “Duel” race Erik Jones and the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Sport Clips Toyota competed strongly across the 60-lap shootout and was in contention to earn a top-10 qualifying spot. However on their first entry to pit road, with a miscue about timing lines between team spotter and driver, Jones was called for speeding by NASCAR and incurred a penalty.

The delay placed the No. 20 team one-lap down without sufficient time to make up the positions. For Sunday’s main event, Erik Jones and the No. 20 Sport Clips Camry will start in 28th place, within row fourteen, when they take the green flag at 2:30pm ET for 200 laps, 500 miles of fast-paced action. The No. 20 team will conduct tire changes and car adjustments from pit stall 11 during the race event.
