No. 20 CRAFTSMAN Toyota Camry News and Notes:

  • JONES AT SONOMA RACEWAY: Heading to the west coast, Erik Jones will make his third-career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series start at Sonoma Raceway. In his previous starts at the track on the previous course configuration, Jones has one top-10 finish and has led one lap. Jones also has one K&N West start at the track recording a sixth-place finish.
  • JGR AT SONOMA RACEWAY: Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) has 65 total starts at Sonoma Raceway in Cup Series competition. In those starts, the team has earned four wins, 13 top-five finishes, 25 top-10 finishes and three pole starting positions. The team has led 302 laps, completed 6,798 of 6,969 attempted laps (97.5%) and earned an average start of 15.6 and an average finish of 16.5. Only two drivers have scored wins at the northern California track. Tony Stewart scored wins in 2001 and 2005 with Kyle Busch earning wins in 2008 and most recently in 2015.
  • SAME TRACK, NEW LAYOUT: For the first time, NASCAR will use the full course at Sonoma Raceway increasing from the 1.99-mile course to the 2.52-mile course. Jones participated in a road course school at the track in 2018 that utilized the entire course, giving him experience on the 2.52-mile track before arriving for the Toyota/Save Mart 350.
  • THIS WEEK ON THE NO. 20 CAMRY: For the first road course race of the year, CRAFTSMAN will return to the No. 20 Toyota Camry at the northern California track, Sonoma Raceway.
  • MICHIGAN RACE RECAP: Jones started the Firekeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway from the 14th position and ran as high as second before late race tire issues and a broken part dropped the team to a 31st-place finish.
  • RACE INFO: The Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway is scheduled for Sunday, June 23, 2019. Coverage will begin at 3:00 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1, PRN and SIRIUS XM Channel 90.

From the Driver’s Seat:

Erik Jones: “Sonoma has been a challenging place as a driver, but last year went really well for us. I thought we made a lot of improvements from our first year there. Obviously a totally different package this year with the track and the race car, so it’s kind of a big change. I was actually able to get some time on the track with the layout we will run in 2018 in a road course school. I guess that’s a little bit extra experience and hopefully that will be able to translate over to what we do in the Cup car.”

From the Pit Box:

Chris Gayle: “This obviously was a major focus track for us last year after struggling a bit during the race in 2017. Erik did a lot of work himself, attended driving school and had a really solid top-10 finish last year. We look to build on that good 2018 run this season. I think the increased downforce will make these cars drive a touch better without some of the low grip issues we had in 2017 and 2018. The new NASCAR track layout (using the full course, 2.52 miles) will also be very interesting this season. It’s possible we get another passing zone leaving the carousel heading towards the braking zone in Turn 7. I think it will also be very helpful that this is the full course that Erik drove when attending driving school in Sonoma last season, so hopefully this provides a leg up for him experience wise verses some of the other competition.”
