Erik Jones – No. 20 DEWALT Toyota Camry Preview (MENCS) – Talladega Superspeedway

No. 20 DEWALT Toyota Camry News and Notes:

  • JONES AT TALLADEGA SUPERSPEEDWAY: Erik Jones will make his sixth-career Cup Series start at Talladega Superspeedway this weekend driving the No. 20 DEWALT Toyota Camry. In his previous five starts at the 2.66-mile superspeedway, Jones has a best finish of eighth in this race one year ago. Jones also has starts at the track in both the Xfinity and Truck Series. He earned his best finish in the Xfinity Series in 2015 when he finished fifth and that same season, he earned his best Truck finish of fourth.

  • JGR AT TALLADEGA SUPERSPEEDWAY: Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) has 135 total starts at Talladega Superspeedway in Cup Series competition. In those starts, the team has earned four wins, 33 top-five finishes, 52 top-10 finishes and one pole starting position. The team has led 1,284 laps, completed 24,175 of 25,539 attempted laps (94.7%) and earned an average start of 16.4 and an average finish of 17.6. Bobby Labonte scored the first Cup win for JGR at Talladega in 1998 followed by Kyle Busch in 2008, Tony Stewart in 2008 and most recently, Denny Hamlin in 2014.

  • THIS WEEK ON THE NO. 20 CAMRY: This week DEWALT returns to the No. 20 Toyota Camry for the final superspeedway race of the 2019 season at Talladega Superspeedway.

  • DOVER RACE RECAP: Erik Jones and the No. 20 DEWALT Toyota Camry team started the Drydene 400 at Dover International Speedway from the eighth position and was able to maintain their position in the top 10 while fighting a tight-handling Camry most of the race. Unfortunately, a late-race pit road speeding penalty derailed the strong run dropping the team to two laps down. Jones crossed the finish line with a 15th-place finish.

  • RACE INFO: The 1000Bulbs.com 500 at Talladega Superspeedway is scheduled for Sunday, October 13, 2019. Coverage will begin at 2:00 p.m. ET on NBC, MRN Radio, SIRIUS XM Channel 90 and the NBC Sports App.

From the Driver’s Seat:

Erik Jones: “Talladega is always a fun weekend. The atmosphere and the fans are great. It’s hard to pick a strategy for the weekend because you really just need to stay clean for most of the race and put yourself in position to have a shot at the end. I’d love to go out and get another superspeedway win and I think we could do that this weekend. Similar to last week, we have one goal for the rest of the season and that’s to win races and try to get the best finish in points we can when we leave Miami.”

From the Pit Box:

Chris Gayle: “As a team we are really trying to focus on having a clean weekend in Talladega. Superspeedway racing has been pretty much feast or famine for us in 2019. We’ve been caught up in wrecks at all three events this season, but only able to come back from the lone wreck in the Daytona 500. We feel like we have some small improvements to race and handle better than the first Talladega event, so it will be interesting to see how much those changes help. However, it’s still paramount to have a clean race and avoid any major wrecks to have a shot at winning in Talladega. Just hope the fans enjoy the show!”
